t's been many years since I have been to an Indian buffet (Namaste in Portland, OR), so I wasn't sure what to expect at Taj. But I was pleased from the get-go.
Note: the buffet is only offered on weekends between 11:30am-2:30pm,
Taj is located in the Belle View shopping plaza. When you enter Taj, you immediately descend a mirror-encased stairwell which leads to the restaurant.
Taj is upscale with linen tableclothes and a formally dressed wait staff. Service was excellent and responsive, with frequent offers of beverage refills and prompt clearing of dishes.
I tried all the buffet dishes and found them all to be tasty. I have an aversion to cilantro and was very pleasantly surprised to discover their dishes did not contain cilantro, with the exception of the Tandoori chicken.
In the hot foods section, my favorites were the samosas, lentil stew, chicken in tomato sauce and a very nice basmati rice.
Complimentary naan bread is provided.
For dessert, Taj had a most delicious chilled rice and pistachio pudding. It was so good, I had three servings of it. They also had what I would describe as doughnut balls in a sweet sauce, which were very good.Helpful 2Thanks 1Love this 2Oh no 0 - May 5, 2024Updated review2 check-ins

Favorite was makhani, followed by the Kali Mirch Tikka Malvani (black pepper/tamarind sauce), then the madras (a bit too much coconut for me). Takeout order was ready on time and pickup was easy.

Delicious food! I especially love the Paneer Tikka appetizer. The service is great and when we choose to carry out, the food is ready on time. This is one of my favorite restaurants :).

We had a great first experience with Indian cuisine this past weekend. We went in for the buffet so we could try several things. We were greeted and seated in a timely manner despite a large party heading in before us. Everything was smelled amazing and so fresh. The waitstaff were dressed up and the decor was nice with table clothes and dishes. A nice added touch.
I stayed away from anything with curry or presumed spicy as it isn't my thing. I was pleasantly surprised with how minor the heat was in the dishes. While others might complained it was a selling point for me and our toddler.
Everything was so yummy and I found many things I liked.
I didn't care for the desserts but I'm ok with that. We will most certainly be returning.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dec 4, 2022
I'm sorry but I can't be disingenuous.... This is probably the most Americanize Indian food I've eaten.....
First off- tandoori wings- edible, flavorful but nothing like tandoori wings I've had in the past from other restaurants.
The chicken Tikka was subpar in flavor, spice and execution.
The Lamb Biryani- mediocre at best... the rice was dry, spices were inconsistent- I didn't finish this dish but for the most part, the heat, spice and flavor was lacking. Throughout the entire dish, i had 4 overcook pieces of lamb....
If you do not like authentic heat and spice this might be a perfect restaurant for you. However, I am West Indian and caribbean so the flavor profiles I was expecting.. severely lacked FOR ME!
If you are new to Indian cuisines - this is a great starting pointHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Charles M.Mililani, HI7715Feb 18, 2024
Excellent food, huge menu and great staff. The ambience is surprising for a strip mall restaurant. I think this is the best overall restaurant south of old town.

Drove here for a meal and came in the door at 2:10 thinking since it's a buffet we had :15 to eat because the time is advertised open till 2:30. Walked in and no one was at the front. Buffet looked empty then two young guys came finally came out from the kitchen. They told us if we want anything to eat we would have to take it home?! I guess if you want to eat here plan on it closing at 2, not 2:30 as posted. Wasted a trip. Rude staff. Bummer.

Simple strip mall front where you go inside and walk downstairs into the dining room. Waiters in white shirts and black tie sweep around delivering food and beverage. Tablecloths are on and the wait staff keeps your dishes clean and water filled. The food is good.
